ChatGPT vs Google Gemini - Part 2: The Blog Post Write-Off

(This post was co-written by ChatGPT and Google Bard/Gemini, who are going toe-to-toe in sharing their insights on the future of AI in Digital Marketing.)

We've all been there: staring down a blinking cursor, the pressure of a content calendar looming, while your brain does nothing but fight the urge to do anything but write that next (hopefully viral) blog post.

Whether you're sharing life-changing baking tips or forecasting the future of puppy fashion trends, writer’s block is the universal villain for all content creators.

The good news? We live in age of technological marvels, where a new wave of AI writing assistant tools seem to go live daily. Need inspiration? A catchy intro? The perfect title? Check, check, check - these tools all tout the ability to help combat those pesky uninspired moments.

But how much AI assistance is too much? If we can use these tools to get the creative wheels in motion, couldn’t we just ask for the whole dang blog post??

Let’s try to find out.

Welcome to part 2 of (get ready for it…) the battle of the bots!

All puns aside, we all love a good, healthy competition so why not put two heavy-hitters toe-to-toe once again?

To keep it scientific (ahem, simpler for me), we’re sticking to my two personal go-to’s: ChatGPT and Google Bard (now known simply as Gemini) where they will be tasked to enter the digital Colosseum and craft blog posts.

Then, we’ll up the ante and post both versions to see how they perform organically.

"Let's get readyyyyyy to rumbleeeee!"

The History of Blogging

Before we dig in to our challenge, let’s first understand why we blog. According to this article from DLMConversion the first blog was started way back in 1994 by Justin Hall, long before the term ‘blog’ was even a thing. A few years later, the term “weblog” was born from the mind of the Robot Wisdom blog writer Jorn Barger, which was then shortened simply to “blog” by a programmer named Peter Merholz. If you find some time on your hands, do some reading into the history of blogging and Barger in particular - it’s genuinely fascinating.

But, what was the point? Well, simply put, to write about shit they liked.

Hall called his effort a '“personal homepage”, while Barger referred to his as “web logging” (hence, weblog), though both were good ole’ fashioned collections of musings and links to things they liked. Links.net by Justin Hall actually still exists today and I will attest that it is wildly fun to lose time in his writings.

All of that said, I’m a huge fan of personal blogs and I applaud the people who pour their passions into their keyboard, just because they like to.

But times, they are a-changing! There are now over 600 million blogs online, most of which are not a charming “personal homepage”, but a marketing tactic used in hopes of climbing to a coveted page one ranking in Google search results. If you enjoy writing, the necessity of blog posting for SEO can be a delightful part of your marketing efforts. However, if you find them daunting, then leveraging AI to help ghostwrite is an amazing way to get the job done without banging your head against your keyboard.

Using AI to Craft the Perfect Blog Post

This is where it gets fun…the answer to crafting the perfect blog post with AI will be found in the posts that our competitors will be tasked with creating.

Now, let’s dig into how we got the results!

The Ground Rules for our AI Assistants

Before we go any further, please note that these prompts were all input with minimal guidance. Sure, we could follow best practices and coach the tools on their role, the tone they should write the output in, etc., but where’s the fun in that?

The goal was to only guide each assistant on the basic architecture of a blog:

  • Requesting a title based on the concept

  • SEO Keyword and metadata recommendations based on the title

  • Writing a 500 word blog post based on the first two responses

  • Recommendations for a Featured Image based on the post

Because Gemini provides multiple drafts and options when asked a question, the executive decision was made to select the first draft or response provided so that the final post is impartial and without human interference.

The Perfect Blog Post According to AI

Title Selection

The prompt for title selection was simple: “what is a good title for a blog post about using AI to craft the perfect blog post?” which created the following outputs:

ChatGPT: “Mastering the Art of Blogging: Unleashing the Power of AI for the Perfect Post"

Gemini: “From Blank Page to Buzzworthy: How I Use AI to Write Killer Blog Content”

If you were paying attention to the links to each post above, you’ll notice that ChatGPT did a curious thing and actually changed the title when I requested the SEO and Metadata recommendations. Because we are seeking little to no human interference, we’ll roll with the output, but I’m already confused as to why.

SEO Guidance

The next step was asking for SEO recommendations based on those titles.

ChatGPT:

Capture the essence of AI-powered blogging with a visually compelling featured image for the "Mastering the Art of Blogging with AI for the Perfect Post" blog post. Picture a sleek, futuristic workspace where a blogger seamlessly integrates artificial intelligence into their creative process. The image showcases a stylish laptop surrounded by cutting-edge AI devices, symbolizing the synergy between human creativity and technological innovation.

Highlight the key elements of the blogging journey enhanced by AI, such as a brainstorming session with AI-generated ideas, the use of writing assistants, and the strategic optimization of blog content. Incorporate vibrant colors to evoke a sense of energy and innovation.

Include subtle visual cues like stylized AI icons or graphics to emphasize the technological aspect of AI-powered blogging. Consider overlaying snippets of well-crafted blog text on the screen to visually represent the outcome of using AI techniques in content creation.

Ensure the image reflects a harmonious blend of creativity and technology, conveying the idea that AI is a valuable ally in the pursuit of the perfect blog post. This featured image should not only attract attention but also communicate the transformative power of AI in the world of digital content creation.

Gemini:

Concept:

  • Split image: Divide the image into two distinct sections.

  • Left side: A blank page with a blinking cursor, symbolizing writer's block and the starting point.

  • Right side: A computer screen displaying a blog post with a catchy headline and engaging visuals, representing the "buzzworthy" end goal.

Additional elements:

  • Bridge the two sections: Utilize a bridge element, like an arrow or a thought bubble, visually connecting the blank page and the finished blog post, signifying the transformation enabled by AI.

  • Color scheme: Use a contrasting color scheme, with the left side (blank page) being subdued and the right side (finished blog post) being vibrant and colorful, emphasizing the transformation and positive impact of AI.

  • Text overlay: Optionally, include a text overlay on the right side with a compelling phrase like "From Blank to Buzzworthy" or "AI: Your Content Creation Ally."

Overall tone:

  • Professional and engaging: The image should be visually appealing yet maintain a professional tone aligning with the blog's content.

By incorporating these elements, the featured image will effectively capture the essence of the blog post, highlighting the transformation from writer's block to creating "killer blog content" with the help of AI.

These descriptions were then plugged into a Pickaxe I put together, that then generated the image. If you haven’t checked out Pickaxe, I highly recommend you check it out. The founders are super receptive to feedback and it is hands-down the simplest way to create all sorts of cool AI outputs.
